ACL-Tear & Its Types

The knee is held in place with the help of many ligaments and tendons. The anterior cruciate ligament is one of these and amounts to one-half of the knee’s cruciate ligaments. The other cruciate ligament is the PCL or posterior cruciate ligament. These ligament tears might sometimes cause severe carpal tunnel syndrome in median nerve.

The ACL is the most commonly injured ligament in the human body, which makes the ACL tear treatment one of the most common orthopedic surgical procedures. The good news is not every ACL injury requires surgery. An ACL tear specialist must first diagnose the type of ACL tear depending on which the treatment is determined. The types of ACL tear are often put into three categories known as Grade I, Grade II, and Grade III.

The grade of tear determines the best treatment for an ACL tear. Here is how the stages in the ACL tear are decided.

The Stages in ACL-Tear

  • Grade I – This is when the ACL fibers are stretched slightly. The only ACL treatment recommended for this grade is rest and some rehabilitation with a physical therapist.

  • Grade II – The second ACL tear grade is rarer and is also known as a partial tear. This happens when the ligament is stretched so severely that it partially rips. An ACL specialist will take a close look at this tear before deciding the course of ACL tear treatment to move ahead with.

  • Grade III – The most severe type of ACL tear is also known as a complete tear. This happens when the sprain or stretch is so severe that all the fibers in the ligament rip. The only treatment for an ACL tear in the knee of this severe type is a surgical procedure. The torn ACL treatment will also require long periods of physical therapy post-surgery.

  • What are the Causes for ACL-Tear?

There are numerous causes for an ACL tear. These include:
  • Contact injuries – Most ACL tears are found in athletes playing contact sports and the most common cause of these injuries is contact with another athlete.

  • Impact injuries – One of the most common causes for an ACL tear in non-athletes is caused by a fall or an impact on the knee.

  • Unstable movements – A common cause of ACL injuries is when movements that are not stable are performed by the knee. These movements twist or stretch the knee beyond its natural range of motion.

  • Symptoms for ACL-Tear

The symptoms of an ACL tear include:
  • A bubbling sensation on the joint

  • A sudden popping sound from the knee

  • A feeling of a shift in the joints.

  • Sudden and uncomfortable warmth in the joint.

  • Discoloration around the knee caused by internal bleeding in the joint.

  • Redness and inflammation on the knee.

  • Severe bruising and unbearable pain around the knee.

    About ACL-Tear

The ACL is a ligament that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone. An ACL tear refers to an injury to this ligament.

    Grade 1 – Overstretched ACL
Grade2 – The fibers of the ACL are partially torn
Grade 3 – The fibers of the ACL are completely torn

    • Contact injury – Athletes who play contact sports like football and basketball are particularly vulnerable to contact injuries. These athletes are at a higher risk if they apply more pressure on the joint on a daily basis.
    • Impact injury – This type of injury is the most common cause of an ACL tear. It includes falls or twists or accidents that involve the knee. The severity of the injury will determine the extent of the tear.
    • Unstable movement of the joint – A sudden pivot or an awkward movement of the knee could also cause injury to the ACL. Usually, these types of injuries cause minimal damage to the ligament.

The complications of an ACL tear depend heavily on the extent and severity of the injury, other injuries to the joint, and level of physical activity after recovery. ACL tear complications include a high risk of osteoarthritis developing in the joint. Even if the injury has a clean and full recovery, the risk remains high.

If a patient suspects that they have an ACL tear they must immediately administer first aid and seek medical help. If there are no external injuries, then the patient must use the RICE method to alleviate pain and swelling. The joint must be rested with an elastic band to secure the knee. It must also be regularly iced and kept at an elevated position to prevent the pooling of blood.

An orthopedic surgeon might recommend surgery to repair the ACL if the injury is particularly severe with a complete tear. The surgery involves the removal of the damaged ligament fibers that are then replaced with a graft from a tendon. A tendon is a type of tissue that connects bones to muscles. The replacement tendon or graft is taken from the patient’s knee or from a donor. After the surgery, the patient will require extensive physical therapy in order to regain full motion of the joint. Unfortunately, there isn’t a set time frame for the recovery period. It entirely depends on the extent of the damage and the level of physical fitness of the patient.

The main way to ensure that an ACL tear does not occur is to build up the strength of the surrounding muscles. Certain exercises can help with this. Apart from the muscles around the knee, the core must also be strengthened which prevents undue strain on the joint. Patients must be aware of their movements and avoid awkward or twisting movements.

    Frequently Asked Questions

An ACL specialist is a medical practitioner who falls under the orthopedic surgery field of medicine, this means they deal with injuries to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones. A specialist who deals with anterior cruciate ligament tear treatments is a super-specialized surgeon in their field and can also if required treat other orthopedic injuries.
If the treatment for an ACL tear in the knee is surgery, doctors will require the patient to stay in the hospital overnight prior to the surgery and a day after the surgery. This is because the surgery requires general anesthesia. If the anterior cruciate ligament tear treatment is not surgical in nature, then doctors may prescribe painkillers and physical therapy. This is done for Grade I and some Grade II tears and this does not require hospitalization.
Yes, regardless of the grade of an ACL tear, if the patient forgoes the recommended treatment and ignores the action required, it can severely deteriorate. Any ACL treatment must be followed according to the doctor’s recommendation to ensure a complete and risk-free recovery.
Treat Pa works with numerous partnered hospitals that have treatments for ACL tear in knee, they are not, however, limited to orthopedic surgeons. Treat Pa’s network of partnered hospitals are multispecialty in nature and employ only the best practitioners in each field of medicine.
The best treatment for ACL tears depends on the severity and grade of the tear. For a Grade III tear, the surgeon will recommend a surgical option for a torn ACL treatment in order to repair the fibers in the ligament itself.
An ACL ligament tear treatment carries minimal risk and is not considered a dangerous surgery. It is important to note, however, that any unseen risk caused due to a reaction to anesthetics is a minor possibility but it isn’t a probable cause. Treat Pa’s partner hospitals are cautious and perform numerous tests to ensure the risks of any surgery including an ACL surgery are as minimal as possible.
Yes, Treat Pa has a medical coordinator available to help patients manage and navigate the world of medical insurance claims. The coordinator at the Treat Pa team is on-hand to answer any questions about the insurance claim status and will get in touch with the patient’s insurance agency on their behalf to help avoid any red tape during the claims process.
The orthopedic surgeon performing the surgery will provide a full treatment plan to the patient during their post-op. This includes a recommendation of physical therapy that needs to be done with a physical therapist present. The actual physical rehabilitation can be done in some of Treat Pa’s partner hospitals but the patient needs to consult a physical therapist separately as it is not included in the ACL knee surgery cost.
No, a Grade-I strain is a minor strain and is not an actual tear, the surgeon consulting at the time of the diagnosis will implement a recovery plan including rest, physical therapy, and if needed pain medication. If a patient follows the doctor’s advice, the Grade-I tear will heal entirely and will not require surgery.
Treat Pa partners with leading hospitals that have the best physicians in their field of medicine. A customer can compare costs and facilities between any of Treat Pa’s partner hospitals to book an appointment with a practitioner based on their requirements. This includes a consult for a partial ACL tear treatment.
